Who is Covestro?
Covestro is a German materials company that became independent from Bayer MaterialScience in 2015. According to Covestro's own site, the company focuses on polymer materials. It sells raw materials rather than retail paint. Its chemistry shows up in polycarbonate, polyurethane foam precursors, coatings resins, and specialty films. The material that gets the most attention from coating buyers is MDI, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, because MDI and polyols form the polyurethane backbone in many coatings and adhesives.
Why does this matter? If someone asks about the chemicals behind a coating, they are usually trying to figure out how reliable the supply is. It is not enough to compare coating cans. You need to know whether the raw materials are consistent enough to make the same formula every batch. That is where the supplier conversation starts.

Wanhua Chemical is a major global MDI producer with modern plants and a real cost advantage at scale. The second advantage is supply security. Covestro operates multiple production sites, so if one plant has an issue or a logistics delay hits a port, you have more options for locating qualified product. That matters when a customer deadline is 48 hours away.
The third advantage is regulatory and sustainability support. More coating buyers are being asked for VOC data, life cycle data, and even mass-balance documentation for recycled feedstock. Covestro has been developing lower-VOC waterborne systems and renewable raw material options. That is not just marketing. A supplier that understands the data makes your own compliance work easier.
If I only bought on price per ton, I might start elsewhere. But if I am responsible for not shutting down production, the total cost comes down to data, consistency, and backup availability. Those are the advantages I can defend in a procurement review.

In 2021, SSPC and NACE International combined to form AMPP, the Association for Materials Protection and Performance. When you still see SSPC in a specification, it usually means the spec writer is referring to surface preparation and coating standards developed under SSPC.
For a project owner, this matters most when the spec lists a number like SSPC-SP6 or SSPC-SP10. Those are surface preparation standards, and they directly affect cost. A commercial blast clean costs more than a brush-off blast. If the coating is inspected by someone with AMPP or SSPC training, that is another layer of protection against premature failure.
I would rather add inspection cost before a job than pay for coating failure after it.
Shark Coatings: cost per square foot in Florida
I cannot give you a reliable statewide price for Shark Coatings because I have not seen an official public price list. Brand-name coating systems are usually installed by authorized applicators who quote based on site conditions. Searching for Shark Coatings cost per square foot in Florida will give you ballpark numbers, but you should not use a single number to compare bids.
The real question is what that square foot includes. In Florida, the cost spread is mostly about surface preparation and dry film thickness. For an accessible surface with minor prep, a professionally installed coating system in early 2025 might fall in the $2.50 to $5.00 per square foot range. Add rust removal, old coating failure, high roofs, containment, or a thicker spec, and it can go to $7 or more. That can be justified if the quote shows the work.
If you are comparing prices, ask for a line-item proposal: surface prep, primer, intermediate coat, topcoat, dry film thickness, warranty, and weather limitations. The quote with the lowest bid but no dry film thickness is not cheaper. It is just unfinished.
What should a coating owner check before letting a job start?
Every serious material or coating problem I have responded to could have been caught earlier. That is why I use checklists, even for urgent jobs. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.
Before the job starts, check the approved materials list against the actual delivery. Compare product codes and batch numbers. Confirm the certificate of analysis matches the delivered lot, not just the product name on the purchase order.
During application, check weather conditions. Coating specifications usually include dew point, relative humidity, and surface temperature. That is not paperwork. Coating applied above the moisture limit will fail even if the raw materials are perfect.
Also, schedule a hold point for adhesion or cure testing if any material substitution happened. Last March, 36 hours before a deadline, we caught a batch code mismatch that would have put unapproved material on a truck. Stopping the load cost a few hours and an $80 reverification fee. Running it would have risked a $12,000 project.
